A one-day professional development workshop presented by Dr. Marilyn Friend.

This workshop will cover:

  • Analysis of the current status of your co-teaching practice, including evidence of its effectiveness
  • Overview of contemporary co-teaching as distinguished from co-teaching of the 1990s and early 2000s, including the rationale for today’s recommended practices
  • Clarification of the roles and responsibilities of general educators and special educators in co-taught classes
  • Assessment of your use of the six co-teaching approaches and plans for extending your practice by using specific approaches and variations of them 
  • Discussion of the instructional dimension of co-teaching, that is, specially designed instruction 
  • Responses to other co-teaching issues and concerns you are experiencing or anticipate

About Marilyn Friend

Marilyn Friend, PhD, has spent her career as a general education teacher, special education teacher, researcher, professor, administrator, teacher educator, and staff developer. She is professor emerita of education in the Department of Specialized Education Services at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and she is past president of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving the educational success of children and youth with disabilities and/or gifts and talents.

Friend has consulted with school professionals nationally and internationally as they collaborate to educate their students, assisting them to create classroom partnerships, to form productive and efficient work teams, and to foster inclusive practices.  

Dr. Friend’s publications include her best selling book, Co-Teach! as well as two laminated guides, Co-Teaching: Strategies to Improve Student Outcomes and Co-Teaching & Technology: Enhancing Communication & Collaboration, as well a popular DVD training series.
