Next Generation Co-Teaching With Marilyn Friend – Workshop Recap

Next Generation Co-Teaching, a professional development workshop with Dr. Marilyn Friend, co-sponsored by Comprehensive School Solutions (CSS) and Rockland BOCES, was a great success. With over 80 participants the level of enthusiasm and engagement was truly exciting. Dr. Friend is a superb presenter with a deep commitment to co-teaching and sharing ways to make this instructional model most successful.

Combined with her unparalleled knowledge of the topic is her skill as a presenter and her ability to engage the audience through probing questions and feedback. Among the topics covered were a review and expansion of the co-teaching models, with commentary on the impact of each. Focus was also on the topic of specially designed instruction and the need to ensure that students with IEPs are afforded the benefit of this dimension of teaching. Dr. Friend emphasized the equal value of each member of the co-teach team, and the added value of partnership and collaboration. She also spoke to the topic of technology and shared ways in which technology, even in the planning phase of co-teaching, can be so valuable. A rich set of materials, both print and media, enhanced the day, as did Dr. Friend’s sharing of a wide variety of classroom examples and her humor.

This was the first collaboration between the Rockland BOCES and National Professional Resources. There were 16 districts from the lower Hudson area represented and many came with teaching teams that had the benefit of working together and fine tuning their practice. Participant feedback has been very positive and all agree it was a highly successful event.
